Pine Knoll Shores on the Crystal Coast

Pine Knoll Shores is a residential community on Bogue Banks, a 26-mile barrier island along North Carolina's Crystal Coast. The town was developed in the 1970s by the Roosevelt family, who planned it around the island's native maritime forest rather than clearing it. The result is a community where live oaks, loblolly pines, and wax myrtles grow right up to the edges of neighborhoods, giving Pine Knoll Shores a shaded, natural feel unlike any other beach town on the island.

The town sits between Atlantic Beach to the east and Indian Beach to the west. It is home to the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, one of the state's three public aquariums and the most-visited attraction on Bogue Banks. The Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area, a 265-acre preserve of maritime forest and salt marsh, runs through the center of town and connects to the Iron Steamer Beach Access.

What to Do in Pine Knoll Shores

The NC Aquarium is the centerpiece. It features exhibits on the marine life of the Crystal Coast, including a living shipwreck exhibit, touch tanks, and seasonal programs like turtle releases and behind-the-scenes tours. It is a reliable destination for families, especially on rainy days.

The Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area offers some of the best nature walking on the island. The trails wind through maritime forest, across salt marsh boardwalks, and out to the beach. Birding is excellent here - warblers migrate through in spring and fall, and shorebirds feed along the sound-side mud flats year-round.

The beach in Pine Knoll Shores is quieter than in Atlantic Beach or Emerald Isle. Access points are smaller and less crowded, making it a favorite for residents and return visitors who know where to go. The sound side is ideal for kayaking, with calm water and marsh channels that are home to herons, egrets, and the occasional river otter.

Pine Knoll Shores does not have many restaurants or shops of its own, but neighboring Atlantic Beach and Morehead City are minutes away. The town's appeal is its natural setting, not its nightlife - and most residents would tell you that is exactly the point.
